Why Areca Leaf Plates Are Replacing Plastic in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu's single use plastic ban pushed thousands of caterers, hotels and temple trusts to look for a disposable plate that does not harm the soil. Areca leaf plates — locally known as paaku mattai thattu — turned out to be the most practical answer.

Areca plates are made from leaf sheaths that fall naturally from the areca palm. Nothing is cut, nothing is bleached and nothing is coated. The sheath is washed in water, sun dried and heat pressed into shape. The result is a plate that holds sambar and hot rice without leaking, and then composts back into soil within about two months.

For businesses the maths is simple: a natural plate that customers photograph and appreciate costs only marginally more than a coated paper plate, and it removes any risk of penalties under plastic regulations.
